Course Information
Description A health-related, work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Learning Outcomes
In accordance with the mission of LSC-PA, SRGT 1360 Clinical assists the student to develop the particular skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for success as a surgical technologist. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions.
2. Perform within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry.
3. Demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
4. Use appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.
5. Exhibits comprehension of content-area reading material.

Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Surgical Technology Program graduates will be able to:

1. Uses appropriate terminology related to anatomy and physiology, instruments, suturing, accessory equipment,
and specialized equipment associated with surgical procedures.
2. Operates as a surgical technologist in the scrub role during all basic surgical procedures.
3. Demonstrates a surgical consciousness that promotes maintenance of a sterile field.
4. Practices within the legal and ethical framework of the surgical technologist.

Lecture Topics Outline
Mid-Term Evaluations will be done before our first day of clinical. A student that earns an Unsatisfactory Grade will NOT go to clinical and will be dropped from the program and all corequisite courses. A Grade of Unsatisfactory is not consistent with clinical patient safety standards. 

Final day to drop a course or withdraw without academic penalty is Monday, September 29, 2025.
Final day to drop a course or withdraw with penalty is Monday, November 24, 2025.

During this first semester of the Surgical Technology Program an "EXAM AVERAGE OF 75 or HIGHER" must be achieved in both corequisite courses 1405 Introduction to Surgical Technology and 1409 Fundamentals of Perioperative before receiving the first clinical assignment. If a student does not have an "EXAM AVERAGE OF 75 OR HIGHER" in either the courses of SRGT 1405 Introduction to Surgical Technology or SRGT 1409 Fundamentals of Perioperative Concepts and Techniques, then that student will not be allowed to go to clinical and will be dropped from the program and all corequisites.

EXAM Averages do not include Daily Work Grades or Quizzes.

A Grade of Unsatisfactory is not consistent with clinical patient safety standards. 

Determination of
Final Grade

1. The Final Grade in this course is subject to the above Grading Scale. Both the Mid Term and Final Evaluations require a Grade of "S" to progress to the next level in the course and the program. The Final Grade will be posted through the college computer system.
2. Evaluations are based on course objectives and clinical skill check-offs being performed at a Satisfactory performance level. A Satisfactory performance level is consistent with patient safety standards in the lab and the clinical setting. 
3. Clinical Skills checkoffs be performed on campus and at clinical locations.
4. Students will be graded on clinical performance, and procedure cards. Students' performance will be evaluated by both preceptors and clinical instructor. Students are expected to perform the following surgical skills correctly: opening sterile supplies, identification of unsterile items, counted brush stroke method hand scrub, Donning of Sterile Attire, Gown and Glove sterile team members, Surgical Case Preparation, Passing of Sharps, Surgical Counting and many more.
5. Should a student be determined to not meet any of the above standards at the time of the Mid Term and Final Evaluations, they will receive a "U" for their Final Grade for the 1360 Clinical Surgical Technology. A Satisfactory Grade is required on both Mid Term and Final Evaluations.

No Extra Credit will be assigned during the semester.

Instructor Policies
Classroom is lecture by instructor, with time for questions during lecture, distractions and interruptions will not be tolerated and student could be asked to leave class for the day if noncompliant. Appropriate dress for the classroom is required and expected as to not distract from the learning environment.

Attendance Policy
1. Because poor attendance is a leading reason for termination from a job in all areas of employment, attendance at all scheduled classes is expected.
2. A student who is absent from course activities for more than three (3) unexcused days may be dropped from the program by the Program Director. Excused absences are only approved with a medical document for the day or other official documents 
3. Students on campus but not in class are considered absent.
4. Late arrival to class is disruptive. Students who consistently arrive after the beginning of the class (2 or more times) will be counseled and a plan of corrective action determined. Class will begin promptly at the scheduled time. Students who arrive fifteen (15) minutes after the beginning of class should not enter the classroom and should wait until break to enter.
5. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor of any absence. If the student is unable to contact the instructor(s), the student should call 409-984-6356 or 1-800-477-5872 ext. 6356. The student should also email the faculty or call the faculty office and leave a voicemail.
6. Students who arrive after an exam starts, but before it ends, may take the exam without penalty. They are given no additional time.
7. A student must receive direct permission from an instructor before that student leaves a clinical site for the day. If a student leaves a clinical site without permission from an instructor, that student will be subject to probation for the rest of the semester or suspension from the program.
8. A student is considered a “no call, no show” if they fail to arrive in a timely manner to class or clinical without prior communication with an instructor. That student will be subject to probation for the rest of the semester or suspension from the program.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
